Summer hiking

The alps and mountains represent a wild and natural environment which needs protecting. Tourist use in both winter for skiing and the summer months for hiking and biking, does not always encourage an environmentally friendly approach. Now, however, Les Gets is at the forefront of pursuing a less environmentally damaging approach to using the mountains. It is now possible to have ag reener skiing holiday! As the Independent on Sunday reported recently “Les Gets, the pocket-sized resort in the massive Portes du Soleil ski region of the French Alps, embarked on a 10-year sustainable development programme back in 2003 and is now widely acknowledged as one of the most environmentally proactive ski resorts... pedestrianising a large portion of Les Gets' village centre, providing free shuttle buses, using only biodegradable oil in its piste-bashers, and reducing the brightness of the street lights to save energy ...almost all of Les Gets' public buildings, including its police station and church, are now heated with renewable energy provided by a woodchip boiler fuelled by wood sourced from local forests. Les Gets has replaced diesel generators on the Ranfolly Express with solar panels. The resort also recuperates kinetic energy from the Les Planeys chairlift from the rotation of the return pulleys on the pylons."
